Sen. Ben Ray Luján has long fought to protect New Mexico communities from gun violence.
In the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate, Sen. Luján has proven time and time again that he is willing to stand up to the gun lobby. Even as a junior senator, it was Sen. Luján who helped break a nearly 30 year legislative logjam on gun violence by voting to pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
Sen. Luján’s work continued after that. In 2025, Sen. Luján introduced the Disarm Hate Act that would close a deadly loophole that has led to armed, violent hate crimes. He has also supported common-sense gun violence prevention legislation like an expansion of background checks and a ban on assault weapons.
Sen. Luján said:
It’s time for the federal government to do everything possible to protect the American people from gun violence. Because when it comes to this crisis, there is no vaccine on the horizon – what we need right now are brave leaders and common-sense laws.
