As the former chair of the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee and member of the Assembly Budget Committee, Assemblyman Bill Spearman has been a consistent leader and supporter of gun violence prevention and community safety.
Born and raised in Camden City, NJ, Assemblymember Spearman knows how gun violence uniquely impacts urban communities and has fought to protect his constituents.
During his time in the New Jersey General Assembly, he has:
- Voted to preserve funding for Rutgers University’s Gun Violence Research Center, which has conducted and supported dozens of studies that help gun violence prevention advocates and policymakers better understand the contours of this public health crisis and its solutions
- Advocated to bolster the state’s concealed carry permitting system, banning firearms from sensitive public places, like preschools, playgrounds, parks, and hospitals
- Supported legislation to implement firearm microstamping, a revolutionary technology that marks bullets to aid law enforcement in tracing guns recovered from crimes and solving homicide cases
