In 2024, Speaker Don Scott became the first Black speaker of the House of Delegates in the 400-year history of Virginia’s state government.
He has led Virginia House Democrats in the fight to end gun violence and protect Virginia communities. While the work he has done has been consistently stymied by the Youngkin-Sears administration, Speaker Scott has never given up on working for the people he serves.
Speaker Scott has championed legislation to:
- Require universal Brady Background Checks
- Improve and invest in implementation of extreme risk laws, which temporarily remove firearms from a person in crisis
- Ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines

Gun violence continues to ravage our communities. Whether a domestic partner has access to a gun and makes good on their threats, or a curious child has one within reach — we know that the end of so much suffering can only be achieved when we finally do something about guns.
