For Dr. Maxine Dexter, the fight against the gun violence epidemic is personal.
As a mother, she has had to suffer through the worst fear of being unable to reach her daughter, who was in lockdown for over 12 hours during a mass shooting incident on the University of Virginia campus on November 13, 2022. As a healthcare professional, she has witnessed the heartbreaking impact of gun violence on families and communities. Now she’s in Congress to say enough is enough.
Dr. Dexter said:
We need to develop and test prevention strategies, and then ensure widespread adoption of these strategies, oftentimes through legislation. I am committed to this work and hope our community will demand the action we all deserve to raise our children in safe communities.
As a physician leader, Dr. Dexter served on state and national gun violence prevention task forces, fighting against this deadly public health crisis. While serving in Congress, she has fought for common-sense gun violence prevention laws like banning ghost guns, expanding background checks, passing extreme risk protection order laws, and more.
