As a mother, educator, and deputy whip on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Rep. Jahana Hayes has tirelessly advocated for gun violence prevention.
The fight against gun violence is personal for Rep Hayes. Before joining Congress, Rep. Hayes was a teacher for 15 years. During the Sandy Hook massacre, she was teaching in a classroom just 30 minutes away. She understands firsthand the threat that students face from gun violence, the number one cause of death for children in America.
Rep. Hayes said:
Under my legislation, kids who are at risk for involvement in gun violence would receive education-based programs that address gun violence. Instances of gun violence committed by children often stem from a deep cycle of violence. Without intervention, these tragedies will persist. By connecting youth to mental health professionals, counselors, and mentors, and increasing healthy community engagement, we can better address the root causes of violence and stop the escalation to devastating tragedies.
In Congress, Rep. Hayes has fought for life-saving legislation like the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — the first major gun safety legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years. She has also called to ban ghost guns, ban assault weapons, bolster secure storage laws, and more.
