Ending America’s gun violence epidemic is a personal mission for Rep. Judy Chu.
In 2023, a gunman opened fire at the Star Dance Studio in her hometown, Monterey Park, California, where she once served as mayor, killing 11 people and injuring nine others. That tragedy transformed her community and has driven her work in Congress ever since.
Rep. Chu said:
No community should experience what Monterey Park has over this past year. That’s why I’ve long fought to ban high-capacity magazines, implement universal background checks, and restore the assault weapons ban.
As a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Rep. Chu supports expanding gun violence research, reinstating the assault weapons ban, and instituting criminal background checks for every gun sale. In 2022, she voted to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major federal gun safety law signed in nearly three decades. She also introduced the Flag Act, providing grants to help communities navigate the legal system when seeking to use an extreme risk protection order to temporarily remove firearms from someone in crisis.
