Rep. Mark Takano believes gun violence must be treated as the public health crisis it is.
In 2022, Takano supported the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which expanded background check requirements and strengthened protections for victims of domestic violence. He continues to push for a federal assault weapons ban, noting that even California's strict gun laws leave loopholes without one, and he supports expanded universal background checks nationwide.
Rep. Takano said:
I call on my colleagues to accept our responsibility for protecting American lives and pass legislation to address the crisis of gun violence in America.
Rep. Takano also authored the Gun Violence Prevention Research Act, which would fund research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to better understand and address the nation's gun violence epidemic, building on his earlier success in securing $100 million in federal gun violence prevention research funding.
