Brady Celebrates Virginia Election Results, Proving Once Again That When Gun Violence Prevention is on the Ballot, Commonsense Wins

Washington, D.C., November 5, 2019 Today, Brady celebrates the election of a gun violence prevention majority to the Virginia General Assembly. This election will alter the balance of power in Richmond after a majority of Virginia voters ranked gun policy as their top issue when heading to the polls and followed through by electing Brady-endorsed and pro-gun violence prevention candidates to represent them and defend their interests.

Brady President and Virginia resident Kris Brown stated:

“Democratic and Republican campaigns alike should take notice: gun violence prevention is a winning issue. This election proves that candidates can run on gun violence prevention and that next year voters will be going to the polls looking for leadership to address the gun violence epidemic in America. Campaigns of both parties and across the state campaigned on common-sense gun violence prevention policies like expanding background checks. Clearly, that strategy worked. The new legislature’s first order of business must be answering voters’ concerns and addressing gun violence across the commonwealth. I look forward to Virginia, the home of the NRA headquarters, enacting these reforms at once.”

The results are clear: voters were energized by gun policy and gun violence prevention won. Today’s election occurred five months after 12 people were shot and killed in a mass shooting in Virginia Beach and less than four months after the Virginia legislature failed to address gun violence in the commonwealth during a special session. Voters across Virginia and across parties demanded action and, with this new class of legislators, they will get it.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
