Brady to Prevent Gun Violence Endorses Del. Jennifer Boysko in Virginia Special Election

Washington, D.C., December 21, 2018 - The Virginia Executive Committee of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence today announced it is endorsing Virginia State Delegate Jennifer Boysko to fill Congresswoman-elect Jennifer Wexton’s seat in the January 8th special election for the 33rd district seat of Virginia’s State Senate.

Northern Virginia Brady chapter president and Brady Campaign and Center board member Martina Leinz said Del. Boysko (D-Fairfax) would be a powerful voice for common sense gun reform in the Virginia Senate.

"Jennifer Boysko has proved she is a champion for gun violence prevention in Virginia's House of Delegates," Leinz said. "She supports universal background checks on gun sales, a ban on assault weapons, and initiatives that can reduce the risk of family fire -- gun suicides and unintentional shootings involving unsecured guns in the home. We heartily endorse Jennifer Boysko for the 33rd district Senate seat because we know she will work hard to make Virginia communities safer from gun violence."

Del. Boysko has felt the legacy of gun violence personally, having lost three friends to suicide by firearm. She supports Brady’s End Family Fire campaign, which helps educate gun owners about the risks of family fire and how to reduce them. Suicide accounts for a vast majority of family fire incidents. While secure gun storage is critical to reducing family fire incidents, removing a gun from the home, if there is someone in crisis, is the safest solution. That is why Del. Boysko is calling for Virginia to join 13 other states in instituting an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law, which provides family members and law enforcement officials with a legal mechanism to temporarily remove guns from those who are a danger to themselves or others while protecting their right to due process.
