Brady Endorses Rep. Bobby Rush for Re-Election

Washington, D.C., February 5, 2020 - Today, Brady endorsed Rep. Bobby Rush (IL-01) in his campaign for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020. Brady is proud to endorse Rep. Rush during “Gun Violence Survivors Week,” the week dedicated to recognizing the survivors of gun violence and the scope of the gun violence epidemic in the United States.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Representative Bobby Rush personally understands the toll that gun violence takes on families and communities. Tragically, Rep. Rush is one of the millions of fathers in the United State who has lost a child to gun violence, as his youngest son Huey was shot and killed in 1999. Even before this tragedy, Rep. Rush was a stalwart champion for common-sense violence prevention and gun safety laws with particular concern for the most vulnerable and underserved communities. Brady is proud to endorse Rep. Rush for re-election.”

A lifelong advocate for public safety and violence prevention, in the 116th Congress, Rep. Rush introduced H.R. 33, the Gun Trafficking Prohibition Act, which would for the first time create federal penalties for gun traffickers, and H.R. 4062, the Blair Holt Firearm Owner Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2019. Further, he co-sponsored and championed H.R.8 and H.R.1112, two bills which would expand and strengthen background checks. These bills passed the U.S. House of Representatives in February 2019, but have yet to receive a vote in the Senate.

Rep. Rush shared:

“I am humbled and honored to receive endorsement for my re-election from Brady. Your endorsement strengthens my determination to continue our fight to stem the rising incidents of firearm violence through legislative action such as the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act.

I know firsthand the deeply felt pain that comes from gun violence and I process daily the trauma of my youngest son’s death from a firearm. We owe it to Huey, and all who have lost their lives to gun violence, to remain vigilant in our pursuit of creating a non-violent society. I stand in unity with the Brady survivors and supporters and their goal to reduce gun violence 25 percent by 2025.”

Brown concluded:

“Rep. Rush has spent the better part of his life advocating for vulnerable communities. In America today, we know that Black Americans are ten times more likely to die from gun homicide than White Americans, while Black teens are fourteen times more likely to die from gun homicide than their white peers. We cannot ignore this reality. We are proud to endorse Rep. Rush and his consistent call to address this crisis and end gun violence.”
