Brady Endorses Rep. Stephanie Murphy for Re-Election: A Strong Advocate for Common-Sense Gun Violence Prevention

Washington, D.C., January 22, 2020 - Today, Brady endorsed Rep. Stephanie Murphy (FL-07) in her campaign for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020.

Brady President Kris Brown stated:

“In 2016, Orlando and the Florida 7th District witnessed the then-worst mass shooting in modern American history at Pulse nightclub. This horrific attack targeted the LGBTQ and Latinx communities. It also showed the strength and resilience of the Orlando and Central Florida communities who came together in unity, denouncing hateful acts of gun violence. Stephanie Murphy channels that strength in Congress, advocating for common-sense gun violence prevention policies that bipartisan majorities of Americans want and that will make communities, like Florida’s 7th District, safer. Rep. Murphy’s clear voice, informed by her experience in the private sector, and as a national security specialist, is why she has been recognized as one of the most effective and independent voices in Congress. Rep. Murphy embodies our motto, taking action not sides. We need her voice to continue championing gun violence prevention solutions. We’re proud to endorse Rep. Murphy for re-election.”

Rep. Murphy announced her first bid for the U.S. House of Representatives following the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub, motivated by the clear need for change in our country and winning that election despite entering the race only four months until the general election. She is the first Vietnamese-American woman to serve in Congress and has made gun violence prevention a priority, as a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and championing bipartisan bills, such as clarifying provisions that led to the first federal funding for research on gun violence in almost 25 years and expanding and strengthening background checks. Rep. Murphy has demonstrated an understanding of and commitment to these issues and her community.

Co-chair of the Florida 7th District Brady Chapter, and constituent, Shana Bell shared:

“Since announcing her first campaign for Congress in 2016, Rep. Murphy has centered and championed common-sense gun violence prevention policies that will make our community safer. Our community is acutely aware of the immediate and long-term effects of gun violence, after the 2016 Pulse shooting. Rep. Murphy has fought for policies that address the needs of her constituents in Congress, particularly the LGBTQ and Latinx communities that were targeted and disproportionately affected by that tragedy. We’re grateful for Rep. Murphy’s consistent and vocal support of these policies. It’s why we need to send her back to Washington.”

Rep. Murphy added:

"Since coming to Congress, I’ve fought to build support for common-sense gun safety measures, standing up to the NRA and putting families first. I'm proud to earn this endorsement from Brady, a strong ally in our efforts to push for meaningful solutions to make our communities safer. Together, we must bring peace of mind to the thousands of families who fear losing a loved one to gun violence in this country."

Given the urgent need for federal action to reform our nation’s gun laws and to reduce gun violence, Brady will continue to issue endorsements for the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate and state and local offices ahead of the 2020 elections.
