Brady Endorses Sen. Cory Booker (NJ) for Re-Election

Washington, D.C., February 24, 2020 - Today Brady endorsed Senator Cory Booker (NJ) in his campaign for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2020.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“From his time as Mayor of Newark to his time on Capitol Hill, Sen. Booker has ensured that the gun violence epidemic in the United States is never forgotten in the halls of power. From his 14-part plan to prevent and curb gun violence to his full throated dedication to raising this issue in the Presidential campaign, Sen. Booker has proven his understanding of and commitment to substantively addressing gun violence. Sen. Booker has championed this issue and helped to lead the effort in the Senate to pass meaningful legislation, despite recalcitrant opposition from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Sen. Booker not only demands that we acknowledge and discuss this public health crisis, but that we acknowledge its toll on all communities, especially communities of color. This emphasis and clarity of purpose makes Sen. Booker an essential champion for common-sense gun policies in the U.S. Senate. Brady is proud to endorse Sen. Booker for re-election.”

Since joining the Senate in 2013, Sen. Booker has co-sponsored or supported common-sense gun violence prevention legislation. Sen. Booker understands that a public health crisis that claims approximately 100 lives a day requires comprehensive federal action, especially for overlooked causes of gun violence such as death by suicide. This perspective informs Sen. Booker’s policy proposals, such as his Firearm Suicide Prevention Plan which takes a five-pronged approach to addressing suicide by firearm. Similarly, Sen. Booker introduced S.2671, the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, which would provide grant funding for violence prevention and intervention programs in urban centers. Sen. Booker supports policies that an overwhelming majority of Americans want to see enacted, such as expanding and strengthening federal background checks on firearm purchases. In short, Sen. Booker is not afraid to act on his convictions and to speak up on these pressing issues.

Sen. Booker stated:

"I am thrilled to receive the endorsement from my friends at Brady, who have been trusted leaders and allies in the fight to end gun violence. This is a personal fight for me. To make justice a reality for all, we have to end the epidemic of gun violence and invest in communities that have been shattered by the trauma left in its wake."

Given the urgent need for federal action to reform our nation’s gun laws and to reduce gun violence, Brady will continue to issue endorsements for the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate and state and local offices ahead of the 2020 elections.
