Brady Campaign Endorses Karen Bass, A Leader and Voice for Gun Violence Prevention

Washington, D.C., October 28, 2020 - Today, the Brady Campaign made its final endorsement of the 2020 election cycle, endorsing Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37) in her campaign for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Brady Campaign President Kris Brown shared:

“Over the last year, Brady has had the privilege of endorsing incredible candidates across this country for the United States Congress. Today we are pleased to close that process with a true champion for gun violence prevention, Representative Karen Bass. From her time working as a community organizer in South Los Angeles, to serving as Speaker of the California State Assembly, to leading in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bass has consistently fought for the rights of the people that she represents to live free from fear, and to live free from gun violence. Her knowledge and understanding of the vital need for community-based solutions to prevent gun violence make her an invaluable asset to the American people; she is a needed champion for addressing the root causes of violence and to take bold action to keep all Americans safe from gun violence.

In the House of Representatives, Rep. Bass has shown her strong leadership, including joining with the late Rep. John Lewis in a sit-in on the floor of the House to demand a vote on needed gun safety legislation. As the Chairwoman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, she was instrumental to the passage of H.R.8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, which would institute universal background checks for gun transactions, and H.R.1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, to fix the Charleston Loophole. She is the lead sponsor of the bipartisan Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act which would for the first time close the ‘Boyfriend Loophole’ and keep guns out of the hands of convicted stalkers. She is the lead sponsor of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would ensure accountability, end racial profiling, and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

In short, Rep. Bass recognizes that gun violence is a complex problem that requires comprehensive solutions, and continues to lead the charge for needed change. Brady is proud to endorse Rep. Karen Bass for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Rep. Karen Bass
shared:

“It is a great honor to be endorsed by the Brady campaign. It is thanks to you that we have made the progress that we have on expanding background checks nationwide. We have saved lives and I look forward to continuing our work next Congress.”

Prior to serving Californians in Congress, Rep. Bass served as the Speaker of the California State Assembly, becoming the first Black woman to serve as the speaker of a state legislative body in the United States. In California and in Washington, Rep. Bass has forcefully advocated for common-sense gun violence prevention policies that will make all Americans safer. In Congress, Rep. Bass has consistently championed gun violence prevention legislation and funding, as well as serving as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus since 2019 and the chair of the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
