Washington, D.C., October 7, 2020 - Following the 2020 Vice Presidential debate in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Brady Campaign applauds Sen. Kamala Harris’ bold stand for public health and safety, her urgent call for protecting our democracy, and her emphatic denunciation of the forces of racism and white supremacy at work in our country. Sen. Harris’ performance clearly demonstrated how a Biden-Harris administration will work on behalf of all Americans.

“Tonight, America again saw why we must elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice President. While Mike Pence offered a veiled version of Donald Trump’s blatant racism and disdain for democracy, Sen. Harris outlined how a Biden-Harris administration will protect Americans’ voting rights and institute needed democratic reform to ensure that those most impacted by gun violence, namely Black and Latinx communities, have a voice in our laws and policies.

From reforming our nation’s criminal justice system to addressing systemic racism, it is clear that a Biden-Harris administration will work to heal and unify our nation as it struggles to address deep division. When Vice President Pence lied about voter fraud in relation to mail-in-voting, Sen. Harris offered clear and calm reassurance to all Americans. It must be restated that voting-by-mail is safe. It is secure. We cannot let lies about the integrity of our elections go uncorrected. We also cannot overlook that neither President Trump nor Vice President Pence committed to a peaceful transfer of power and they owe that to the American people.
Tonight, Sen. Harris also displayed the empathy our leaders have lacked these last four years. Sen. Harris and Vice President Biden understand the compassion that is necessary when a loved one is lost. That compassion will be essential as we overcome and recover from the pandemic. Sen. Harris demonstrated the compassionate leadership we need, and the leadership we will get in a Biden-Harris administration.”

Though less chaotic than the first presidential debate, the contrast in vision for the direction of our country was just as clear tonight. In Vice President Pence’s vision, we will have four more years of the exhaustion, division, and racism of Donald Trump’s America. Senator Harris presented a different path—one in which we enact the Biden Plan to End Our Gun Violence Epidemic to make our country safer, and one in which we care for one another and unite to make our country stronger. Tonight, Sen. Harris showed she and Vice President Biden have the experience and ideas to lead America toward that future.
