Upon President Joe Biden’s decision to exit the race, Brady endorses gun violence prevention champion Kamala Harris for President
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 21, 2024 — Following President Joe Biden’s announcement today that he will not seek reelection, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention group, endorses Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next Democratic presidential candidate.
Brady President Kris Brown stated:
Alongside President Joe Biden, Vice President Harris built the strongest gun violence prevention presidential administration in history. Her record shows that she understands the impact of gun violence on everyday Americans. As a senator, she supported common-sense gun violence prevention efforts, including banning assault weapons, expanding background checks, and promoting the safe storage of firearms. During her tenure as California Attorney General, Harris spent six years helping strengthen and protect the state’s gun violence prevention laws — which are the strongest in the country. She is a gun owner who understands the importance of responsible gun ownership and respects the Second Amendment.
Under the Biden-Harris administration, America saw the single largest decrease in violence in modern American history. That is no accident. That is the direct result of tenacity and passion to take on the gun lobby, advance sensible solutions, and build a safer future for our country.
Guns are the leading cause of death of youth in America. We can’t afford a future where we do not fight off this preventable epidemic with every tool we have. This November, our lives are on the ballot. We must vote for Kamala Harris to free America from gun violence.
The Biden-Harris administration’s historic actions to combat gun violence include:
- Passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most comprehensive federal gun violence prevention policy since the Brady Bill was signed into law 30 years ago
- Establishing the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, led by Vice President Harris, with the understanding that tackling this epidemic will take a whole-of-government approach
- Confirming a permanent director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for the first time in years, an essential step to modernize the agency and robustly enforce the nation’s gun laws to address gun trafficking and reduce gun violence.
- Implementing more executive actions to reduce gun violence than any other administration, including:
- Expanded Brady Background Checks
- Regulated untraceable ghost guns
- Invested in community violence intervention programs
- Promoted safe firearm storage, including among parents, to reduce the threat of unsecured firearms
###
Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
