WASHINGTON, July 18, 2024 – Top Republican leaders are set to leave Milwaukee today without addressing the increasingly dire issue of gun violence – despite Trump himself being shot less than 48 hours before the convention began. Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation's leading gun violence prevention organization (founded in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan) responded with the following statement.
Brady President Kris Brown said:
“Just days after their party leader was shot and hundreds of others across the country killed and injured as a result of guns, Republican leaders failed to offer any solutions to the rising crisis of gun violence. Instead, they used the RNC – an event that millions of voters tune into – to mock Trump’s gunshot injury, brag about irresponsible gun ownership, and give away AR-15s.
“This week reaffirmed what we’ve known all along: safety is on the ballot in November. Guns are the number one killer of youth in America. Do we want leaders who will stand up for the well-being of our kids and communities? Or do we want leaders who will continue to ignore gun violence – even as more than 300 people are shot every single day in this country?”
Brady President Kris Brown and Brady Chief Policy & Programs Officer and gun violence survivor Christian Heyne are available for comment and interviews live, via phone, or Zoom, and can also discuss:
- Trump and Vance’s records on guns and the implications of the gun policies housed in Project 2025 and Agenda 47
- JD Vance’s grotesque comments about guns at the RNC
- The need and demand for a national assault weapons ban
- The proliferation of gun ammunition vending machines across the American South
- Current congressional efforts amid the Trump rally shooting to overturn expanded background checks on gun sales

The only mentions of guns were:
1) Delegates mocking gunshot injuries
2) Vance bragging about irresponsible gun ownership
3) An AR-15 giveaway

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
