As a mother and Navy veteran, Missy Cotter Smasal knows that we need gun violence prevention solutions now to protect our children and our communities.
Cotter Smasal has been a long-time volunteer for Moms Demand Action, a grassroots gun safety group, and organized a petition campaign to demand the Virginia Beach City Council invest in safety and security measures to protect public schools. She became a vocal advocate for gun safety in the wake of the Virginia Beach shooting.
Missy Cotter Smasal said:
We want to make sure that we can prevent future acts of violence.
If elected, Cotter Smasal pledges to support legislation to expand Brady Background Checks to help keep guns out of the hands of prohibited purchasers, ban assault weapons, and implement extreme risk protection orders. The incumbent, Rep. Jen Kiggans — one of the gun lobby's top allies in Congress — has failed to address gun violence in the Commonwealth. She has an "A" rating from the NRA, opposes common-sense legislation that helps delay access to firearms to those in crisis, and voted to repeal a ban on "stabilizing braces," deadly devices devices which are often used to transform pistols into more lethal short-barreled rifles.
The Brady Campaign is proud to endorse Missy Cotter Smasal to represent Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
