Tim Walz calls for evidence-based solutions to gun violence in vice presidential debate
WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct 2, 2024 — Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation’s leading gun violence prevention organization, commends Gov. Tim Walz for reaffirming his and Vice President Kamala Harris’ steadfast commitment to protecting our children and communities from the devastating impacts of gun violence. During last night’s vice presidential debate, the country watched Gov. Walz elevate one of the top priorities for voters: addressing America’s gun violence epidemic with common-sense gun reform and evidence-based public health solutions.
Kris Brown, president of Brady Campaign, said:
Last night’s debate showcased Gov. Walz’s leadership and the unwavering commitment of the Harris-Walz ticket to addressing the gun violence epidemic in America. Walz reaffirmed what we’ve known all along: public safety is on the ballot in November. Guns are the number one killer of our youth and voters want solutions. That’s why it is crucial that we have leaders who will prioritize the well-being of our kids and communities.
We cannot afford leaders such as J.D. Vance who continues to push policies we know don’t work and resist the change we so desperately need. Installing stronger windows and heavier doors to turn our children’s schools into fortresses and hiring armed guards is not the answer. Extreme risk laws, expanded Brady Background Checks, and investment in gun violence research, solutions offered up by Gov. Walz, are proven to protect our children and save lives. Gov. Walz and Vice President Harris continuously demonstrate that it is possible to be gun owners, respect the Second Amendment, and support common-sense gun reforms.
###
Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
