Washington, D.C., February 27, 2020 - In recognition of her tireless, continuous, and consistent work to enact federal gun violence prevention laws and make our country safer, Brady endorses Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (CA-12) in her campaign for re-election.
Brady President Kris Brown explained:
“From voting for the original Brady Bill multiple times to working to pass assault weapons bans and then fighting to have those bans reauthorized by a recalcitrant Congress, Speaker Pelosi has demonstrated that her leadership is essential to enacting federal gun violence prevention reforms. In just this Congress, under her leadership the House has passed multiple gun safety bills, including H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112, two of most comprehensive gun violence prevention bills in a generation that were passed in February 2019. In the intervening year, Speaker Pelosi has not let these bills die in Senator McConnell’s legislative graveyard, instead leading the effort to remind voters and the rest of the Senate that every day they do not act, 100 Americans are killed by gun violence. At the latest count, there have been over 36,000 Americans killed by guns since these bills were sent to the Senate.
Speaker Pelosi understands and feels the moral imperative to stop the daily violence that afflicts our country. There is no greater champion in this fight. There is no more effective champion in this fight. Brady is proud to endorse Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for re-election.”
Speaker Pelosi has a sterling record on gun violence prevention. In addition to her leadership as Speaker and her work to pass H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112, she brought to the floor the Violence Against Women (VAWA) Reauthorization, which for the first time, works to close the deadly “boyfriend loophole” by preventing people convicted of intimate partner violence and stalking from purchasing or possessing firearms. She voted against the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. She voted against the Firearms Manufacturers Protection Bill and the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), harmful legislation that shields the gun industry from accountability for fueling violence across the country. She has earned her F rating from the NRA, proudly.
Speaker Pelosi shared:
“As elected officials, it is our duty to ensure our people are safe. Under my leadership, House Democrats have taken bold action to save lives and strengthen background checks by passing common-sense, bipartisan legislation that Americans from corner to corner of our country overwhelmingly support. It is an honor to receive the endorsement of the Brady Campaign.”
Brady California President Mattie Scott stated:
“I am proud to endorse House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Her constant leadership and continuous support of sensible, gun violence prevention laws makes America safer. We’re in it to win it with Nancy Pelosi’s fierce leadership.”
Scott is a resident of California’s twelfth district and a gun violence survivor. In 1996, Mattie Scott’s youngest son, George C. Scott, 24, was killed by gun violence in their Western Addition neighborhood in San Francisco. Since then she has worked tirelessly to pass gun violence prevention laws in California and the country, including with Speaker Pelosi, and has attended the State of the Union as a guest of the Speaker several times.
“Speaker Pelosi often notes that each member of Congress pledges to ‘protect and defend the American people.’ She has shown that she understands that this pledge means taking action to stop the gun violence epidemic in our country. We need her voice in this fight.”
Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
