Brady Congratulates Gun Safety Champion Laura Gillen on her Victory in NY-4

Brady celebrates the defeat of extremist incumbent Anthony D'Esposito, one of the “Gun Lobby’s Freshman Five” and a top target of Brady’s election efforts this cycle.

LONG ISLAND, NY, Nov 7, 2024 — Brady Campaign and Brady PAC today congratulated Representative-Elect Laura Gillen on her victory against Representative Anthony D'Esposito in New York’s 4th Congressional District.

As a member of the “Gun Lobby’s Freshman Five” – one of five freshman representatives whose voting records prove they are beholden to the gun lobby – Anthony D'Esposito was among Brady’s top targets in the U.S. House. Brady reached more than one million voters this cycle to encourage support for gun safety champion Laura Gillen and other endorsed challengers, including via youth-focused phone banking; door-to-door canvassing; GOTV postcards; targeted digital ads; and strategic earned media to amplify the voices of survivors and local community members impacted by gun violence.

“Guns are the #1 killer of kids – but in NY-4, voters cast ballots to help free America from gun violence,”  said Kris Brown, President of the Brady Campaign and Founder of Brady PAC.  “We are thrilled to celebrate the defeat of Anthony D'Esposito, one of the 'Gun Lobby's Freshman Five,' by gun safety champion Laura Gillen. In this competitive race, voters chose a leader who will stand up to the gun lobby and protect the safety of our kids and communities. Brady looks forward to working with Laura Gillen to translate her constituents' desire for safer communities into meaningful action.”

“Laura Gillen is a steadfast supporter of gun safety legislation, and we’re excited to see her in the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Ashley Lantz, Executive Director of Brady PAC. “Brady PAC engaged target voters in this district this cycle as part of our “Freshman Five” campaign – and we are proud that these efforts paid off in NY-4.”

Brady PAC was created in 2018 to counter the gun industry dark money Super PACs. In the 2024 cycle, Brady PAC endorsed more than 234 gun violence prevention champions who support common-sense gun safety policies, including universal background checks, safe storage, and a ban on new assault weapons.

The Brady Campaign is the nation's oldest gun violence prevention organization, founded in 1974 and named for White House Press Secretary Jim Brady and his wife Sarah, whose advocacy after Jim was shot during the 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan led to landmark gun safety legislation. Working to change the law, change the culture, and change the industry with over 90 grassroots chapters nationwide, Brady fights to free America from gun violence.
